a first for me

Today I did something I've never done in the five years that I've been teaching at this school. I went home sick. I'm a bit disappointed in myself, though. I promised myself (and Miss W, 2nd grade) that when I went to Principal, I wouldn't ask her if I could go home - I would tell her that I needed to go home. Asking gives her an oppotunity to say no. But that's what I did. I went to her office at 10 AM, told her that I'm sick, and said, "Is there any way I can go home early?" I don't think she'd have said no... but on the other hand, what would I have done if that happened?

Anyway, I have a sore throat and a headache (no fever, though) and I got very little sleep last night because I woke up coughing several times. I thought I'd be able to fake it through the day, but after 2 hours, I knew that wasn't gonna happen. First graders are just too noisy. My kids are well-behaved, but I still need to stay on top of them. I just didn't have the voice or the energy to do that today.

The teacher's aide from Pre-K and K took my class today, but she won't be in tomorrow or Wednesday. I guess that means I'd better recover, and soon. Time to hit the NyQuil.

Get better soon and don't go back until you are better!

It is too late now but have you ever tried Airborne? You have to take it as soon as you feel the sickness coming on. I tried it out this month -it worked wonderfully.

I've seen that Airborne stuff in the store and wondered about it. Last week I started taking Cold Eaze (sp?) at the first sign of a cold, and that seemed to have nipped it in the bud. Hope you were feeling better in time to enjoy your Thanksgiving. I loved all the adorable pictures of your classroom...what I'd give to teach 1st grade.

There's nothing better than curling up in your jammies with a good book or DVD to pass the time and let yourself rest and get better.

I think sometimes we get sick because our body (and mind) needs some time out and we haven't heeded all the subtle warning signs!

On that note, I hope you got spoilt while you were feeling under the weather, and that you are feeling much better since posting :)

Yeah, if it wasn't for the fact that it takes three hours to write lesson plans for a single school day, fewer of us would drag our germ-laden bodies in to the trenches. Hope you're well!
