As always, my first graders are a constant source of entertainment for me. This year, I've taken to carrying a small notebook with me so that I can write down all the amusing things they say.
Today I introduced my friend "Albuquerque the Turkey," which is a large hand-drawn turkey without feathers. We dress him by tracing our feet onto colored construction paper to make feathers. I kept telling the kids that they couldn't see Al yet because he was too embarrassed about being naked. Later in the day, I hung up the turkey, and the room was all a-buzz.
"Look, it's Albuquerque the Turkey!"
"He's naked! Ha ha ha ha ha!!!!" (This was announced with the great glee that can only come from a first grader saying the word "naked" out loud...)
"He's not in Paris anymore!" exclaimed one.
"What?" I asked.
"You said we couldn't see him because he was in Paris. So now he's not in Paris anymore."
I was truly stumped. "Honey, I never said anything about him being in Paris." And then it hit me. "Ohhhh... no, no, I said he was embarrassed... you know, because he's naked..."
More riotous laughter ensued.
Then Little Old Man stood up to defend his new feather-less friend. "Don't laugh at him!" he demanded. "All turkeys are naked! He's not human, you know!"
Oh Lord. I just love these children.

I love kid comments. I keep telling myself that I am going to start keeping a notebook of great kid sayings but I have never done it. I need to do it...
So cute. I have to do the same thing when my kids say something because I'll lose it. But my kids are ten and they want to see what I'm writing. Hee.
