Out of the mouths of babes

I was reading a word ring with one of my young ladies today. She's frequently absent (21 times already this year), and I have to do a lot of one-on-one to get her caught up. She was getting through all the words without a problem until she got to the word "work."

I prompted her with the first sound /w/. No dice. So then I tried to give her some context for the word.

Me: Okay, let's think about this. Where does mommy go when she needs money?
Her: The bank.
Me: Good! She gets a paycheck, and she takes it to the bank. Now let's look at this word again. Mommy gets her paycheck from...? (I prompted her with the /w/ sound once more.)
Her: Welfare!

Hmmm... I didn't see that coming at all.
