Happy Mother's Day!

Happy belated Mother's Day to all mothers (and mothers-to-be) out there! And Happy Mother's Day to all teachers who have to be substitute mothers to countless children day in and day out.

My first grade class planted marigolds about 6 weeks ago, with the intention of sending them home as Mother's Day gifts. As of Friday afternoon, all we had were a lot of leafy sprouts, but they still looked pretty enough to send home.

I used the business card template on Word to print care instructions and a Mother's Day message. The kids signed the message and also made their own construction paper card - because no holiday is complete without a handmade construction paper card. :-)

(front and back view)

After school on Friday, Little Old Man ran to his mother's car, holding the plant against his body with one hand, waving to his mom with the other hand and yelling (in Spanish), "Cover your eyes! Cover your eyes!" She did as she was told, and he scrambled into the car, back end first, keeping the plant out of view until he was in his seat. Only then did he tap his mom on the shoulder and hand her the plant. She made a fuss - big smile, lots of oohing and ahhing, hugs and kisses for LOM, who was beaming from ear to ear. It was all worth it, just to see that reaction.
