Pop culture and current events in my classroom

Things Heard In My Classroom Over The Past Two Weeks

On capitalization
Me: We learned that names begin with capital letters, but so do titles. Mister and Miss are titles. So is Doctor. If your dentist's name is Dr. Green, Dr. is his title and Green is his last name.
Girl: Like Dr. Phil!
Me: Well... okay, sure. Like Dr. Phil.

On the inauguration (mind you, we talked about Bush & Kerry during the election)
Me: Does anyone know what happens with the president today?
Girl One: The new president starts his job.
Me: Good! And our president's name is George...
Several Kids : Washington!
Girl Two: No, it's John Kerry!
Me: *Sigh*

On the church year
Me: When you go to church this weekend, the priest will be wearing green. Does anyone know why?
Boy: For the Eagles!
(By the way, the correct answer is "Ordinary Time")

On Simon Says
Me: Simon says put your hands on your shoulders. Put your hands on your hips. Oh, I didn't say "Simon Says!"
Boy: Miss M, do you mean Simon like from "American Idol?"

And finally... today our school had an Eagles dress down day. Most of our kids and staff were wearing Eagles jerseys or shirts (with the word Eagles clearly spelled out on them). We learned the Eagles fight song, including the ever-popular chant "E-A-G-L-E-S, EAGLES!" (Original, huh? Clearly invented by a drunk football fan.) During journal time, one of my boys wanted to write about football. He raised his hand and said, "Miss M, how do you spell Eagles?"

TGIF, people. TGIF. Enjoy your weekend!
