I've already introduced you to two of my special friends ... the Space Cadet and the Little Old Man. I decided to take it a step further and let you meet another one of the children I spend my days with.
The Cat Girl: When this child came to me, she didn't know most of her letters or numbers. And she didn't care. She has a dimple that she pulls out, along with a 1000-watt grin, whenever she wants to be "cute." It usually works - she is one damn cute little girl. Anyway, her kindergarten teacher told me that she used to get the urge to make cat noises for an hour at a time. She would ask and answer questions in "meow." She hasn't gone kitten yet, but she has tried several other personalities. One day when she was reading her word ring at my desk, she decided to be a car in between reading her words.
"Vroooommmmm.... vroom, vroom, VROOOOOMMMM.... " (big dimpled grin).
"Ooookay," I said. "Let's get back to our words."
Several words later, "Vroom, vroom, vroom-vroom-vroooooom!"
"Okay, that's enough. Put the brakes on, chickie."
"RRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!" (another big toothy grin, accompanied by blank, wide-eyed stare)
Another day, she was a duck. That conversation was quite amusing.
"Hey, you're doing great!" I said. "Have you been practicing at home?"
"Quack quack, quack-quack!"
"Okie dokie. Is mom reading with you?"
"WACK WACK WACK WACK!"
"Well, keep up the good work. Here's your word ring."
"Quack quack." (In a tone of voice that indicated a "thank you.")
"You're welcome."
This job is never boring.

Oh boy! I had Lion Girl one year. She would get down on all fours and roar in and outside of the classroom. What a year. It certainly does make the job interesting.
Hey! I taught Cat Girl last year! Except she was in fourth grade and was considered to be Quite A Freak by then. She used to lick her wrists and run them over her ears. Seriously.
